“Shafer's annual contribution to the Rhône gene pool is one incredible Syrah”
— Steve Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast
2010 Relentless is sourced from a rugged, remote estate vineyard that delivers consistently full, luscious aromas and flavors and a long, cool growing season that is one of the finest we've seen.
“Relentless continues to evolve in ways that are even more elegant and evocative. In the glass the wine presents itself with aromas that are high-toned, bold and floral with a core of classic Syrah meatiness along with dark fruit, cinnamon, rose petals, and black pepper. The mouthfeel reminds me of crème brulee yet with bright acidity, black fruit and cranberry, sweetness, vanilla and a floral finish that lingers on and on. This is one you’ll want to enjoy both in the brightness of youth and in the tantalizing delicacy of age.”
— Shafer winemaker Elias Fernandez
This wine honors long-time Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez and his relentless pursuit of quality. Sourced from small ridgetop and foothills vineyards adjacent to the southern border of Stags Leap District, Relentless is a proprietary blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah.
The two grape varieties grow side by side in vineyard blocks that offer a variety of sun exposures throughout the day, including steep eastern blocks for lots of morning sun and westward sloping blocks, offering midday and late day solar exposure. Thanks to its thin, volcanic soil and quick runoff the vineyard consistently delivers effusive flavors.
At harvest the Syrah and Petite Sirah varieties are typically picked, crushed, fermented and barrel aged together, producing a wine of distinctive richness and elegance.
Finding Our Wines
Robert M. Parker Jr.’s The Wine Advocate,
“The extraordinary 2010 Relentless (96% Syrah and 4% Petite Sirah) offers up notes of graphite, subtle wood charcoal, barbecue smoke, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit, and hints of spice and meat. This full-bodied, supple-textured, exceptionally rich Syrah already has a certain accessibility, but should age well for two decades.”
— Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate
Firm, rich and dense, this combines power with finesse, offering a deep mix of chewy dark berry, dark chocolate, black licorice, road tar, tobacco and loamy earth flavors, tightly wound and leading to a long finish. Syrah and Petite Sirah.
— James Laube, Wine Spectator
“Shafer's 2010 Relentless bursts from the glass with super-ripe dark purple/blue fruit, cloves, leather, mint and white flowers. The 2010 is a deep, fruit-driven wine endowed with superb texture and gorgeous depth … Layers of fruit continue to build through to the huge, voluptuous finish...”
— Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“… expressive aromas of blackberry, minerals, spices and game. Densely packed, concentrated and sweet, showing very good energy to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Finishes with sweet tannins and lovely length. Wears its high alcohol gracefully and comes across as a bit more serious than the equally strong 2009 bottling..”
— Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
“… a supple blend that is absolutely striking. It has bold flavors of cherry, cassis and herbs, and it's buoyed by crisp acidity. It's meaty and leathery with a kick of spice — the very best that syrah has to offer. Pricey, yes, but irresistible.”
— Peg Melnik, Santa Rosa Press Democrat
“Dark purplish ruby color; attractive, deep, intense, plummy, very ripe blackberry fruit aroma with notes of anise, black pepper, and vanilla; full body; big, rich, extracted, textured, cedary, blackberry fruit flavors with good depth; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Appealing to taste now though has the balance and structure to age for another ten years. Very highly recommended.”
— California Grapevine
“From the standout winery, a superb, complex, long-life blend of syrah and petite sirah.”
— Peter Gianotti, Newsday
“…seamless satin – the texture you find in the Northern Rhone. Chalky tannins are held in check, butting against licorice, blueberries and violets. The Petite Sirah plays a larger role than its small percentage, pulling the wine outside the “norm” but allowing in the Syrah’s ripeness with its dark berry tinge and flavor …”
