SHAFER MAKES NATIONAL GUEST APPEARANCE ON BRAVO HIT TV SHOW “TOP CHEF”
May 2004, Napa Valley, Calif. – Shafer’s 2001 Hillside Select took top spot in the reality TV show “Top Chef” which aired nationally on Bravo Television. The episode, called “Napa’s Finest,” first aired on Wednesday, May 3, at 10 pm (PST).
In the ninth episode of this series, filmed at Copia in Napa, competing chefs were challenged to create a dish that paired with black truffles and 2001 Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon. The chefs presented their creations to vintner John Shafer as well as to top wine country chefs including Philippe Jeanty of Bistro Jeanty, Greg Cole of Cole’s Chop House, John Ash of John Ash and Co, and Victor J. Scargle of Julia’s Kitchen at Copia.
Top Chef’s weekly judges also weighed in. They are restaurant owner Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons, merchandising manager, Food & Wine magazine, and Katie Lee Joel, a culinary and lifestyle columnist and married to Billy Joel.
One of the judges’ favorite recipes was a rich comfort food dish combining truffles, filet mignon and macaroni and cheese.
“It was exiting to be invited to be a part of ‘Top Chef,’” says John Shafer. “We’re very appreciative of the many kind things the producers and the on-air folks had to say about the winery and about Hillside Select.”
