SHAFER VINEYARDS DONATES $25,000 TO SUPPORT CALISTOGA FAMILY CENTER
Funds support the Calistoga Preschool Assistance Fund
November, 2006 – Shafer Vineyards is pleased to announce a $25,000 gift to benefit some of Napa Valley’s youngest residents – those of preschool age.
The Shafer gift to Calistoga Family Center is earmarked for the Calistoga Preschool Assistance Fund, which offers financial assistance to moderate-income families to help cover the cost of preschool for three and four year olds.
“Because there are a number of parents of preschool-age children here at the winery, including my son Doug, we wanted to make a gift that would somehow help make preschool possible for more local children,” says John Shafer. “In our research we found that low-income families are eligible for free state-funded preschool programs and higher-income families are able to afford private preschool. But this leaves those families of moderate means in a difficult position, both ineligible for the free programs and priced out of the private programs.”
Shafer adds that research indicates that children who have a good preschool experience are better prepared for the early years of elementary school than those who do not attend preschool programs.
Shafer Vineyards has a long-term commitment to philanthropy that is directed at benefiting the Napa Valley community.
Shafer Vineyards is a 34,000-case winery in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District managed by the father and son team of John and Doug Shafer. The Shafers own and farm 200 acres of vineyards, sources for Shafer’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah.
